How to properly install PTFE tape on tapered threads?
Laurent Dohogne, Awans

Correct installation of threaded fittings is essential to ensure the tightness and safety of fluid systems. For tapered threaded fittings where the seal is made on the thread of the fitting, a key step is the correct use of PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) tape as the sealing strip. In this article, discover the detailed steps for a successful installation, inspired by the best practices used by professionals.

Step 1 : Clean the threads

First, make sure that the male and female threads are perfectly clean. Remove any dirt or residual tape. This step ensures optimal adhesion of the tape and prevents leaks.

Step 2 : Apply the PTFE tape on the threads

Wrap the PTFE tape around the male thread, starting from the first full thread. Make sure to follow the direction of the thread to prevent the tape from unraveling during screwing. Two to four turns of high-quality tape are generally sufficient to ensure a perfect seal.

Step 3 : Cut and adjust the tape

Once the tape is wrapped, cut or tear the end cleanly. Press the tape into the thread in the direction of the thread spiral. Caution: the tape should not exceed the first full thread. Any excess could detach and enter the fluid system, potentially causing blockages or media contamination.

Step 4 : Screw and tighten the fitting

Start by screwing the fitting by hand to avoid misalignment. Then use a wrench to tighten it. Make sure to maintain the correct direction to avoid damaging the threads. Important: do not overtighten, as this could lead to cracks or fitting failures.

And that's it! Your system is now ready to be pressure tested, in compliance with the strictest safety principles.

Additional safety guidelines

  1. Always use an appropriate sealant for tapered threads (such as PTFE tape for NPT threads).
  2. Never mix NPT threads with other types of tapered threads.
  3. For parallel threads, use a gasket or O-ring instead of PTFE tape.

Conclusion

Following these steps ensures a clean and efficient installation of your threaded fittings. By properly using PTFE tape, you can prevent leaks, extend the life of your systems, and ensure their optimal performance.
